I initially started jogging in 1986, because I'm a life-long sufferer of high blood pressure and headaches, and I thought jogging and staying fit would relieve some of the stress in y life, and it did...and it still does in the year 2007, etc. I'm not a treadmill person, as I love the outdoors, and I like to be in the company of the leaves turning; the beautiful blossoms in the spring time; and I love to watch the sun rising and setting, etc. I think this is a quality of life for any person.
My health has always been the top priority in my life, and unlike my father, who never took care of himself, and was sick all the time, and didn't have a quality of life! I look at it this way. If a person can't devote 2-3 hours of time a week to their health...what can they do? The year 2007, marks my 21st anniversary of jogging 15 miles a week, in which I'm proud to have been committed to doing such an important endeavor in my life, etc.
Five of my greatest accomplishments during my lifetime so far are as follows: 1) I lived and survived through the drug culture of the 1960's, and I have never taken drugs of any kind. 2) I don't drink alcohol while I am taking medication, so for all practical purposes, I don't drink. 3) I lost 40 pounds in 2001. 4) I quit smoking in 1970, and I have never touched a cigarette since. 5) I have jogged and pumped iron since 1986...rain or shine!
After jogging 15 miles a week for 21 years, I figured I have covered over 16,000 miles during this time, and I don't plan to quit any time soon, as long as I am able. The benefits of jogging and getting my exercise are as follows:
1) Helps to reduce stress in my life, lower the blood pressure, which is critical for my survival, etc.
2) Jogging helps me to burn off calories, and keep my weight in line at 170 pounds.
3) Appearance is important to me, because it helps me to keep my self-esteem and confidence high, and with a positive attitude, I feel like I can do anything, etc. And I don't plan to be called a fat slob anytime soon! I also have a fear of getting diabetes!
4) Because of the exercise every week, I sleep better, and create more ideas for problem-solving, etc.
5) I've jogged 15 miles and pumped iron every week for over 21 years.
In the year 2007, yours truly is 62 years young, and the best benefit of all, is the fact that people never guess my age...they never even come close! They usually guess my age at 7-10 years younger than I am. Most people guess my age to be in my early 50's and in some cases...in my late 40's I have never had anyone guess my age at over 55! Yahoo! And, if looking younger comes with the territory...it's all frosting on the cake! I can assure the reader, that it's a great feeling when people guess your age many years younger than you are, especially after you've crossed the 60 mark! There have been times, when I have had to show my driver's license (ID) to get a senior discount!
But, I don't do what I do to look younger...I do what I do to stay healthy and out of the doctor's office! What kind of quality of life would I have if I was sick and sickly all the time like my father? Is that anyway to spend a lifetime? The "sweat-therapy," over the past 21 years has been well worth it, and I have made only a few changes as I've gotten older. Instead of pumping iron...I now "pump aluminum!" YAHOO!
